Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to some of the most common questions about our dog walking service in Godalming and the surrounding villages.
How do I book a walk for my dog?
Simply contact us by phone or email using the details on our contact page. We will arrange a convenient time to visit so we can meet you and your dog, and you can meet us too. During this visit we’ll talk through your dog’s routine, any special requirements, and the days and times you would like walks. Once everything is agreed, we will book your dog in for their first walks. After the first few outings we will always let you know how your dog is settling in and make sure everyone is happy before continuing.
Which areas do you cover?
Dog Trotters is based in Godalming and we mainly serve Godalming and the surrounding villages from Puttenham and Compton through Farncombe towards Busbridge and Hascombe. We also cover Witley, Wormley, Milford, Enton and Hambledon.
If you’re unsure whether we cover your area, please do get in touch; we’re always happy to recommend another reputable local walker if we’re unable to help.
Where do you walk the dogs?
We are very lucky to have beautiful countryside around Godalming, and our walks always take place in woodlands, fields and open countryside where dogs can enjoy proper exercise away from busy roads. Some of our favourite walking spots include Puttenham Common, Crooksbury Common, Hydons Ball and Rodborough Common, amongst others.
We carefully choose locations that are safe, spacious and well suited to group dog walking.
How many dogs are on each walk?
We walk small, carefully managed groups so every dog receives proper attention and enjoys a calm and safe experience. Our walks usually include four to six dogs at a time, allowing us to maintain good control and ensure every dog is comfortable within the group. We always operate within local council guidelines and the requirements of our insurance, and dogs are matched carefully so that each group walks happily together.
Can you collect my dog if I’m not home?
Yes, of course. Many of our clients are out during the day and are happy to provide us with a house key so we can collect and return their dog. Keys are always labelled with the dog’s name only, never the owner’s name or address, and security of your home is never compromised. Alternatively we can collect keys from a key safe if you have one, or a discreet location by prior arrangement.
During our initial visit we’ll discuss access arrangements, including where leads are kept, whether your dog is crated, and where they should be settled after their walk. We’re also happy to wipe muddy paws and refill water bowls when your dog returns home.
How do the dogs travel?
All dogs travel safely in Vinnie, our distinctive Dalmatian-spotted Dog Trotters van. Vinnie is fitted with secure crates, meaning every dog travels in safety and comfort. Each crate is set up with cosy bedding, and some have their own privacy curtains for dogs who prefer a quieter space while travelling. We also understand that some dogs can feel anxious about being crated; for this reason, Vinnie includes two open sections which allow certain dogs a little more space while still travelling safely. The van has also been fitted with additional windows and a roof vent to ensure good ventilation, particularly during the warmer summer months.
How long do the walks last?
Our group walks are one hour once we arrive at the walking location. Including collection and drop-off, most dogs are out enjoying their adventure for approximately 90 minutes to two hours.
Can I choose what time my dog is walked?
We always do our best to work around your schedule and can usually give an approximate collection time for your dog. However, exact timings can sometimes vary slightly due to factors such as traffic, roadworks or other unexpected delays. We will always let you know if we are running later than expected.
When planning our routes we also need to consider location, travel time and suitable group matches, as our priority is making sure all dogs are safely walked in happy, compatible groups.
Do you walk dogs in all weathers?
Yes – we walk in all typical British weather, and most dogs enjoy getting out whatever the forecast. In cases of extreme conditions, such as heavy snow or particularly icy roads, we may occasionally need to adjust or cancel walks if it is unsafe for us to travel. If this ever happens, we will always inform clients as soon as possible.
Are you fully insured?
Yes, Dog Trotters is fully insured for professional dog walking. We are always happy to provide a copy of our insurance details upon request.
What happens if I go on holiday or don’t need walks for a while?
If you’re away for a short period, simply let us know as soon as possible and we’ll do our best to accommodate any changes to your schedule. For shorter breaks of less than two weeks during school term time, we are happy to hold your dog’s space without charge. However, during the main school holiday periods (half-term, Easter and summer holidays), or for absences of two weeks or longer at any time of year, we kindly ask for a small retainer fee to keep your dog’s regular walking slot reserved. This helps us manage our schedule and ensures your dog’s place remains available when you return.
What happens if you are away or on holiday?
As Dog Trotters now has three team members, we can often cover each other’s walks when someone is away. Occasionally this isn’t always possible, particularly during busy holiday periods. In these cases we may arrange trusted cover with another local dog walker if required.
We will always give clients as much notice as possible whenever we need to take time off so everyone has plenty of time to plan ahead.
How much notice do you need if I need to add, change or cancel a walk?
We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice where possible if you need to cancel a scheduled walk.
If you would like to add an extra walk or change your usual day, as much notice as possible is always helpful. However, we are generally very flexible and will always do our best to accommodate last-minute requests where space allows.
